Guitar Help Needed!! (Epiphone SG-310) (Tuning/Strings help please)?
Alright so I just got my first guitar. It's a beautiful Sg with all accessories needed. I plugged it up to the amp and learned Smoke On The Water (just the main riff) in about 15 minutes. It sounded amazing, with just the right amount of distortion. Then I decided it wold sound even better if I tuned it so I got out the tuner it came with and started trying. Then I broke the high e-string and I have no idea how to fix it. Also it now sounds more like a banjo than a guitar...
. I guess I'm just asking if anyone has any pointers on anything to do with the strings, tuning, or tone. Hopefully one of my guitar-savvy friends can come over tomorrow and help me out. although I don't know if there is guitar savvy as they say they are. Any help is greatly aprecciated.
Strings that come with a guitar are usually extremely low quality. I would suggest replacing them all. At some point take your guitar to a music shop and have them do a setup and intonation on it. This will ensure that the Truss Rod is straight, that the action is well-adjusted, and that it stays in tune all the way up the neck. These are things that should not be performed by someone who doesn't know what they're doing - since you're a bit of a noob, I would advise taking them to a guitar tech, not one of your friends. Oh yeah, make sure and ask them to check for burrs in the saddle, too. Shouldn't be any, but it doesn't hurt to ask. This will cost you a bit overall, but it's worth it - a well-playing guitar that is properly intonated will sound better than one that isn't, and will be better to play overall.
If it sounds like a banjo you've tuned it too high or too low. The proper notes should be E A D G B E from thickest string (what we call the bottom string, but it's actually located closest to you) to the thinnest string (the top string, the highest pitch string).
You Can change your tuning, of course, but the best way to change your tuning, for now, if you really want to, is to tune down a half step - D# G# C# F# A# D# (or Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb, depending on what your tuner may say). You will need a Chromatic Tuner for this - the Korg CA-20 is about 20$ and is one of the best tuners out there. This tuning is called 1/2 step down, and will make your guitar sound a little deeper - but will also go out of tune a little easier.
I dunno, I'd leave it in standard for now until you get the hang of what you're doing. There's always time for expirimentation. Just so you know, though, tuning down is a great way to get a darker or "heavier" sound out of your guitar, even if it's only a half step down.
When you're tuning, make sure you're using the tuner for now. Eventually you'll learn how to tune by ear, but it is very common for beginners to not have trained ears and tune too high, breaking the strings.
At some point you'll get further into learning the intricacies of what makes a guitar sound good, and by that I mean Pickup Height and pole piece height even and swapping pickups and rewiring guitars, etc. For now expiriment with the difference in tone between volume and tone all the way up and how your guitar sounds when you roll them down a little bit... once you begin to notice little details like this you're on your way to discovering your own tone.
Oh yeah, and using too much gain is actually bad. Usually you want to keep your gain below 50% - this way you can actually tell what notes you're playing, instead of a distorted mess.
