Switch Washer

What does the "check switch" on a washer do? We bypassed it and need to know if it is safe to not use it.
Our washing machine wasn't working (only filled with water then stopped everything) so we bypassed the "check switch" and it now works. Is the "check switch" the same as the "lid switch"? Now if we open the lid of the washer, it stops working (like it is supposed to) - so do we need to replace the "check switch" or can we keep it bypassed?
Our washing machine (Maytag top loader LAT9706AAE) wasn't working (only filled with water then stopped everything) so we bypassed the "check switch" and it now works. In the diagram of the washing machine, the "check switch" is directly underneath the "lid switch". Now if we open the lid of the washer, it stops spinning (like it is supposed to) - so it is safe if anyone opens the top. Do we need to replace the "check switch" or can we keep it bypassed? I am not sure what the "check switch" does. The washer seems to be working great now with the "check switch" bypassed.
What is the model and serial number? Is it a top loader or front loader? Where did you bypass? More information would be greatly helpful, but because i only have what you wrote, i will go from there. For a top loader (door on top) there are two places for a lid switch to be. 1) Right side towards the front of the machine. There is a hole and a small micro switch with two wires going to it. If this is what you bypassed, then that is what your "check switch" is. If it was the switch you bypassed was in the frame under the lid towards the back center or back right side, that is also a lid switch. Now, the importance of the lid switch is to prevent injury due to stupidy (ie sitcking your hand in while the tub is spinning at high rpms) This is necessary to replace if your unit is still under warranty (1 year manufacture warranty and more if you purchased the extended warranty up to five years). This is also deffinitely necessary if you have children. This switch stops the machine from agitating (in some models) and prevents the unit from going into the spin cycle (all models). I would recomend replacing the part that you bypassed, the part is generally cheap $15-20. Hope this helped you.
