Can someone explain the usage of the 5 box patterns on guitar? Are they the same as modes?
I understand the basic major shape, minor pentatonic shape, and the blues shape. I understand how these shapes start on the root note, and eventually lead to the next octave. I also understand the manipulation of the major scale into the different modes; are these modes the same as the 5 box patterns? How come 4 out of the 5 box patterns do not start on the root note?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
because you dont necessarily start on the root every time you play/solo.
the other 4 are there to show that You Can play the scale anywhere on the guitar, the notes repeat themselves after you've gone through an octave
modes are not the same as blues scales, they have 8 notes each octave compared to 5 in a blues scale.
They add a bit more depth and melody cause the blues scale can get repetitive sometimes, each mode is unique and gives off its own mood
