If I move the neck pickup on a Les Paul slightly lower, will it affect the sound quality?
I have this Les Paul kit with a messed up neck that can be fixed if I can move the pickup down from its original spot by about and inch. Would that affect the sound of the guitar and the intonation?
Depending on what you mean by sound, yes and no. The intonation is all managed at the tremolo and because it is a Les Paul, it is highly likely that your bridge/tremolo is of the tunomatic sort. This particular style of tremolo generally sits pretty high off of the body so your tunings will remain intact regardless of where the pickup is placed. As for your tone, moving a pickup (especially a humbucker neck pickup, which is what many Les Pauls tend to have) will dramatically alter the tone. Things like palm mutes and the location at which pinch harmonics are played will change a great deal (due simply to the electromagnetic physics behind it). As for sound quality, that is a matter of preference. If You Can stand (or appreciate) the fact that your neck pickup will have just a little less fatness on clean and a little more crunch on distortion, you will be fine. Hope that this helps!
