vs. Electric Acoustic guitar?

im 15 and about to get my first guitar I like grunge music like Nirvana, Alice in Chains and my Mom says I should learn in an acoustic then electric now spend 2 AIC and Nirvana Unplugged virsion have their songs (all acoustic) so I could learn this and what is difffernce between nylon and steel strings What do u think i should get.
