Is an Electric Guitar safe enough in just a gig bag all the time? Or is a hard case necessary?
I will not be taking it anywhere hardly at all.
A gig bag will protect your guitar from dust, rapid changes in temperature, scratches, and moisture. It won't be much protection if you drop the guitar, or if something falls on it during transport. If you're real careful, a gig bag is okay....certainly better than nothing.
I strongly disagree with the person who said to store your guitar on a stand.....that's a recipe for disaster. Stands can be bumped into or knocked over. They don't protect your guitar from dust, moisture or changes in humidity. Stands are intended for short-term use...like to hold the guitar while you take a break during practice or a gig.
I own hard shell cases for all my guitars, even the ones I don't gig with. (except the Martin Backpacker) It's cheap insurance. If you check musiciansfriend.com you'll probably be able to find a reasonably priced generic case....
